Globally, freshwater fisheries are the most heavily exploited aquatic resources, producing about a quarter of the world’s food fish (some 20 million tonnes per year) from less than 0.01% of the world’s water resources. However, over exploitation is only one of many threats to inland aquatic resources: water resources development for agriculture and other habitat modifications, invasive species and pollution are serious threats and make freshwater biota the most threatened components of global biodiversity.

The Polish Fisheries Association was founded in 1918 and until 1939 was an active organisation of inland fish farmers. After 1939 its activity was suspended. Seven years ago the Polish Fisheries Association was activated by a group of farmers, scientists and lake fishers. Two years later PTR has head office in Poznan and nine regional divisions the most active is Polish Trout Breeders Association (Oddzial Hodowcow Ryb Lososiowatych) with office in Rutki /Zukowo. Every autumn OHRL organises annual salmonid farmers meetings for the opportunity to meet each other, exchange information, learn about new technologies in fish farming. Every year we gather production data and prepare an annual report concerning Polish trout production.
