Globally, freshwater fisheries are the most heavily exploited aquatic resources, producing about a quarter of the world’s food fish (some 20 million tonnes per year) from less than 0.01% of the world’s water resources. However, over exploitation is only one of many threats to inland aquatic resources: water resources development for agriculture and other habitat modifications, invasive species and pollution are serious threats and make freshwater biota the most threatened components of global biodiversity.

TitleComputer User Section of the American Fisheries Society  ( Website )
DescriptionA peer-reviewed software library and a directory of fisheries-related websites.

The American Fisheries Society (AFS) Computer User Section (CUS) was established in 1985 with the following goals: maintain an association of individuals interested in computers and fisheries, promote the exchange of software for analysis of fisheries information, foster communications among fisheries computer users, and provide a source of consumer analysis of computer equipment and software. The CUS publishes a newsletter biannually and participates in the formulation of Society policy. The CUS maintains and distributes software from a peer-reviewed library, supports an electronic mailing list, provides technical information to AFS subunits and members, and provides current information within the Society's home page on the world wide web. It is also involved in sponsoring workshops, symposia and demonstrations.
