| Project Summary | Mud crabs of the genus Scylla are associated with mangroves throughout the Indo-Pacific region. There is rising demand for them as food and consequent interest in culturing them, using the existing fishpond infrastructure present in some Asian countries. This project will seek ways of improving culture systems to promote greater pond productivity. Scientists will develop techniques that promote consistent spawning and hatching of good quality larvae, adapting principles developed in Australia to suit conditions in the Philippines. They will also attempt to increase the survival of larvae to crab stage through development of improved feeding regimes and water management systems. The study will also undertake crab feeding and behavioural studies to determine optimal stocking density of ponds. |
