Freshwater biology or biological limnology encompasses biological studies related to all inland waters (including salt lakes) contained within continental boundaries. This includes standing (lentic) ecosystems such as lakes, reservoirs and ponds and running (lotic) waters such as springs and rivers as well as ephemeral or temporary waters such as pools, tree holes etc. [oneFish specialises in information content on Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Research (methodologies, theories, findings, capacity-building etc). The choice of Knowledge and Media Objects for inclusion under this topic should reflect this specialisation.] .

TitleDevelopment of Limnology in Colombia  ( Document )
Author(s) / Editor(s)Roldan, G.; Ruiz, E.
DescriptionDescribes the present situation and recommends ways that limnological studies in Colombia can be enhanced.

Colombia is the fourth highest country in terms of rainfall and has numerous high discharge rivers such as the Amazon, Orinoco, Magdelanena, Cauca and Atrato among others. There are nearly 1,600 lagoons, marshes and reservoirs. Fish and macroinvertebrates are well known. The knowledge of phytoplankton, zooplankton and periphyton is just beginning. The aquatic macrophytes are also not very well known. Education of specialized personnel is required.
