Globally, freshwater fisheries are the most heavily exploited aquatic resources, producing about a quarter of the world’s food fish (some 20 million tonnes per year) from less than 0.01% of the world’s water resources. However, over exploitation is only one of many threats to inland aquatic resources: water resources development for agriculture and other habitat modifications, invasive species and pollution are serious threats and make freshwater biota the most threatened components of global biodiversity.

The Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries provides general guidance, in the form of suggestions or observations intended to assist those interested in identifying their own criteria and options for actions, as well as partners for collaboration, in support of sustainable freshwater fisheries.   more...

TitleEcology of Freshwater Fish (Journal)  ( Website )
DescriptionThe journal publishes original articles on all aspects of fish ecology and fishery sciences in lakes, rivers and estuaries, including ecologically oriented studies of behaviour, genetics and physiology and the conservation, development and management of recreational and commercial fisheries. Reports of studies examining ecological questions in an evolutionary framework are published as well, including research papers addressing evolutionary ecology, behavioral ecology, population ecology, and population biology. Papers dealing with the life stages of anadromous and catadromous species in estuaries and inshore coastal zones are also published if they contribute to the general understanding of fish biology. Theoretical papers and studies of impact assessment and modeling are published if they generate testable hypotheses about real systems (fish communities, populations and/or species) or if published data are re-analysed to produce novel conclusions or syntheses. Research papers, short communications and review articles are published based on their scientific content. Occasionally, the proceedings of conferences and symposia are published if they are relevant and timely. Each article contains an extended abstract in Spanish.
