| | Examines models used to assist in fisheries management. The topic should include technical information on models of use to fisheries managers and the successes and failures of models as tools for management. Case studies examining lessons learned in the applicability of models to the complexities of real -life management scenarios are encouraged. Linkages are likely with ecosystem modelling and research methodologies. | | | |

| | | | | Title | Evaluating the costs and benefits of research on stock structure for management of the orange roughy fishery
( Document )
| | Author(s) / Editor(s) | Anon. | | Description | This report describes a procedure for objectively comparing the likely returns from research programs, particularly those designed for fisheries management purposes. This procedure requires that the management objectives for the fishery are well defined, and that the research is directed at achieving them. The example used is for Tasmanian orange roughy. The objective of the fishery managers is to maximise the value of the harvest, without threatening the sustainability of the fishery. This has been interpreted as to allow the greatest $ value of catch to be taken over the long term, so long as the breeding stock left in the water is likely to be at least 30% of its original level. | | Keywords | FISHERY MANAGEMENT; RESEARCH PROGRAMMES; EVALUATION | |
