| | | Iran: Inexperienced artificial reproduction of A. gueldenstaedtii from farmed broodstock
by Tofighi, Vahid, http://www.iranfisheries.net/english 22 May 2005 | |
| | During an inexperienced research in Shahid Beheshti Hatchery Center in iran, a couple of Acipenser gueldenstaedtii from farmed broodstocks artificially propagated in spring season. The couple were at the 4th maturity stage from which 900 gr and 290 gr eggs and larvae were extracted, respectively. These fishes were themselves, the result of artificial reproduction in 1997 at the same hatchery center. The project aims to farm sturgeon fish. Concerning C.I (Maturity Stage), this went into artificial propagation after the experts found it suitable for the case. The overall length of the female breeder, which was more than 10 years old, was 120 cm while 9 kg in weight. Exploitation of ovule of this species and production of its larvae before maturity stage were handled in a closed atmosphere using freshwater. It was an "inexperienced project in Iran" and is considered a milestone to expand and develop commercial production of this precious fish in pond. It is noted that sturgeon fish could have adapted itself with any severe change in the ecosystem of the Caspian Sea through different periods. Although hatchery centers affiliated to Shilat release millions of juveniles of these fish in different sizes into those rivers led to the Caspian Sea to restock this strategic fish, destruction of this precious species has soared up in the recent years. According to some figures, some species of sturgeon are on the edge of extinction and this attempt can help restocking of them. Some experts believe that it is impossible to restock completely sturgeon resources in the Caspian Sea even if they are fully protected. They say although pollution is widely controlled and spawning areas are rehabilitated, the restocking can not be carried out successfully. To them, the only solution is to produce, farm, and keep sturgeon fish under artificial conditions. Sturgeon fish went through commercial farming in 1970 and has experienced a considerable development in the recent years. In Iran, such a project was first started in 1990 in Shahid Beheshti Hatchery Center. At present, there are 5000 pieces of farmed sturgeon fish in different ages and weight that are kept in this center. The main species are Huso huso and a few Acipenser gueldenstaedtii which are cultured in freshwater. These fish are fed by hand. In the Caspian Sea area, Acipenser gueldenstaedtii migrates in herds to the Volga and Oral Rivers for spawning. The third option is the Sefidrood in northern Iran. The male and female fish of this species mature at the age of 8-14 and 10-12 respectively. They spawn during spring on rocky bottoms. According to the figures, natural restocking of Acipenser gueldenstaedtii has experienced downward trend from 1961, the main reason of which is said to be the Hydro-electric dam built on the Volga Grad River in the Ex-USSR, which has confined natural places for spawning. Unfortunately due to lack of necessary amount of breeders, hatchery centers have not been successful in releasing enough fingerlings into the sea. In October 2003, experts in Shahid Beheshti hatchery center in an attempt to breed sturgeon fish exploited 1.4 kg caviar from a piece of farmed Acipenser gueldenstaedtii that was 8 years old. The quality of this product ranked Don 2. Now, by producing second fish artificially in this center, Iran has taken a big step in artificial breeding of this species that can cope commercially with the other sturgeon species in the Caspian Sea. | | | | Keywords | IRAN; ACIPENSER GUELDENSTAEDTII; ARTIFICIAL PROPAGATION; FARMED BROODSTOCK | | Geography Keywords | IRAN |
