| | Globally, freshwater fisheries are the most heavily exploited aquatic resources, producing about a quarter of the world’s food fish (some 20 million tonnes per year) from less than 0.01% of the world’s water resources. However, over exploitation is only one of many threats to inland aquatic resources: water resources development for agriculture and other habitat modifications, invasive species and pollution are serious threats and make freshwater biota the most threatened components of global biodiversity. The Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries provides general guidance, in the form of suggestions or observations intended to assist those interested in identifying their own criteria and options for actions, as well as partners for collaboration, in support of sustainable freshwater fisheries.
