Fish-borne parasites of human health concern such as nematodes and trematodes

Emerging food safety issues related to infestation of fish and fish products by parasitic worms such as trematodes and nematodes. Food-borne parasitic diseases are a global public health problem that affect millions of people and cause enormous suffering, particularly amongst poor and vulnerable groups in developing countries. While 700 million people around the world are at risk for food-borne trematode infections (FBT), 40 to 50 million people are infected with one or more of the parasites. The majority of these infections occur in Asia as a direct result of consuming fish.
