| | | Study Tour: Marine Aquaculture & Seafood Markets, China
| |
| Tentative date: July 4-15, 2005
Marine fish farming is one of the fastest growing sectors in Asian aquaculture, with demand for high value fish species such as groupers and other coral reef fishes being driven by China, the worlds biggest and fastest growing market for seafood products.
The Asia-Pacific Marine Finfish Aquaculture Network is pleased to announce a Study Program on Marine Aquaculture and Seafood Markets in China. The Study Program will take place from 4th-15th July 2005 and is intended to introduce participants to the demand side of the live marine seafood trade, and latest developments in marine fish farming and seafarming in China, the worlds biggest aquaculture producer.
Live grouper and other coral reef species are among the most valuable species in Chinese live seafood markets. Southern China and Hong Kong are the two major markets for live marine tropical finfish, particularly coral reef fish species. In 1998, the Hong Kong Agriculture and Fisheries Department estimated 23,603 mt of live marine fish was imported into Hong Kong. Live grouper species account for 5,000 to 6,000 mt per year. Imports to China are substantially more.
Marine aquaculture is becoming an increasingly important source of supply of seafood, with breakthrough in hatchery technology for several commercial important species opening new opportunities for supply of quality products. Future demand for groupers and other marine species will be increasingly met by aquaculture production. At the same time, China has become famous for diversified marine farming, and has evolved many new techniques and species to respond to diverse market demands. | | | |
