oneFish Help: Mailing List Archives (MLA)

Setting up a List Archive
Only the Chief Editor can set up a Mailing List Archive (MLA) in oneFish. If you would like to archive an online mailing list/discussion in oneFish, please contact the Chief Editor: onefish@fao.org

Elements of a Mailing List Archive
External Mailing List Archives require three elements:

  • an existing online mailing list / discussion
  • a oneFish mailbox (email address) that is subscribed to the online mailing list / discussion
  • a discussion KO in oneFish.

External Mailing Lists / Discussion
A wide range of organizations, networks and groups set up and maintain online mailing lists / discussion either on their own web servers, or using a prescribed search engine such as Yahoo! Some of these lists also have online archives, but some do not. Some lists are moderated, some are not. Frequently access to a list requires you to be a member of a specific organization, network or group. All of these lists can be archived in oneFish, providing they are relevant to the scope of oneFish and that the permission of the list owner has been granted.

Mailbox (oneFish email address)
To capture the postings to an external online mailing/discussion list for archiving in oneFish, a mailbox has to be set up external to oneFish. This mailbox is created on the FAO site. This mailbox (email address) must then be subscribed to the mailing list / discussion according to the guidelines of that specific list.

Mailing List Archive in oneFish
Once the mailbox has been set up, a Discussion KO is created in oneFish to host the Mailing List Archive:

Chief Editors only:

  • go to the topic relevant to the subject coverage of the mailing list / discussion to be archived in oneFish;
  • select the Suggest/Add a Discussion form;
  • enter the details requested and submit the form;
  • send a request to the oneFish Maintenanace Programmer to `switch on the list'.

Viewing and Sending Messages/Postings to the Mailing List / Discussion from oneFish

  • you can view postings sent to the mailing list via the Mailing List Archive / Discussion KO in oneFish. Postings are listed in chronological order.
  • the Mailing List Archive may be viewable by all users or may be restricted to members of a specific oneFish group which may or may not reflect the members of the mailing list / discussion.
  • if you are a member of oneFish and a member of the mailing list / discussion you can send messages/new postings to it directly from the Mailing List Archive in oneFish by clicking on the `Add Posting' link. This will open up your default email programme (if the default settings on your own PC are set correctly) with the mailing list email address already entered.

Content and Quality
Topic Editors / KO owners have limited editing facilities for postings archived in a Mailing List Archive in oneFish, i.e. postings can be deleted if they are deemed unsuitable for display in oneFish, but postings cannot be edited.
