oneFish Help: Adding Topics

Suggesting Topics
To suggest a new topic to oneFish you must be a registered member

When you suggest a new topic for oneFish it is automatically assumed that you are also volunteering to be the editor for that topic, therefore please ensure that your contact information includes an adequate description of the subjects/fields that you have qualifications or expertise in or that you have uploaded your curriculum vitae. This information will help the relevant topic editor and/or the Chief Editor to decide whether to accept your suggested topic, and you as the editor.

  • Login, then use search or browse to find an appropriate topic to add your new subtopic to.
  • Click on suggest sub-Topic to go to the suggest a topic form.
  • Following the on-screen examples and help (?), complete the required and optional fields.
  • Enter keywords specific to the subject of your topic using the recommended subject thesauri which can be accessed through the adjacent help links. Use the AGROVOC thesaurus for geographic, species and broad subject terms, and the ASFA thesaurus or Fish Technology Keyword List for more specific subject terms.
  • Click on Submit. You will be notified in a few days, via your oneFish Inbox, whether your suggested topic has been accepted.
Linking and Relating Topics
  • When you are suggesting a topic, you can link or relate other topics to your topic.
  • You should only suggest links with topics that are extremely relevant to your topic, and relationships with topics that are moderately relevant to your topic.
  • Linked Topics will appear in the list of actual subtopics in the topic knowledge screen, but will be followed by an @ sign.
  • Related Topics will appear in a drop-down list below the topic description.
  • To suggest links or relationships, click on the All Topics link in the left hand side bar of the suggest a topic form (this will open up the Topic Directory in a new smaller screen), then cut and paste the required topic number(s) only into the relevant box in the suggest form, separating each topic number with either a comma (,) or a semi-colon (;). When the Topic Directory opens it will go to the topic you are in. You can move up and down the current worldview or go to other worldviews to select topic numbers.
Editing Topics
Only the Chief Editor and the relevant Topic Editor can edit a topic
  • After login, go to the My Topics screen in My oneFish, click on the edit button next to the relevant topic to go to the edit screen and make any changes required.
  • Alternatively use the search or browse facilities to find the topic, then click on the edit tab to go to the edit screen and make any changes required.
  • If you do not want to change the topics that are linked or related to your topic, click on the `Submit' button, the edit process will be completed, and you will be returned to the info/metadata screen.
  • If you do want to change the topics that are linked or related to your topic, check the box next to those topic links you wish to remove, and add the numbers of new topics to the New Links box, separating each with a comma (,) or semi-colon (;).
  • Click on Submit to finish the edit/linking/relating process.

Topic Tips
  • Before suggesting a new topic, search and/or browse through oneFish in areas inside and outside your top level topic to find areas of potential duplication. If there is a topic in another area of oneFish that is similar to the topic you are considering suggesting or creating, consult the other topic editor and/or the chief editor first.
  • When choosing a title for your topic, first refer to subject specific thesauri e.g.: AGROVOC for geographic, species and broad subject terms, and ASFA for more specific subject terms. Direct links are provided to both thesauri from the topic form.
  • Avoid using acronyms or abbreviations unless they are commonly understood and avoid repeating the name of the parent topic in the subtopic name. When adding the name of an organization as a topic, please refer to the Recommended Abbreviations.
  • Please DO NOT create topics called "General", "Miscellaneous", "Other Topics," or any other variation that implies a collection of general or unrelated links.
  • Do not use abbreviations, and symbols to represent words, e.g. &, +, `n.
