oneFish Help: Groups and Topic Permissions

Topic Management

oneFish is primarily an open participatory system, however there are circumstances in which restrictions can be put in place to control the type of access to specific topics. The facility to create groups of members, and to set permission levels for specific topics, allows topic editors and virtual office managers to control the development of their topic(s).

Topic Permissions

Topic Permissions can only be changed by the Chief Editor. Various levels of permission can be set. The default permissions are:

Action on Topic Who can carry out this action
Browse public (all oneFish users)
Edit editor (topic editor)
Suggest new subtopics members (registered members of oneFish)
Suggest new knowledge / headlines to be added members (registered members of oneFish)
Suggest new related or linked topics members (registered members of oneFish)

Please contact the Chief Editor if you wish to set up a restricted topic. You will need to provide justification why the topic should have restricted access.

New subtopics and knowledge objects subsequently added to a restricted access topic (or any topic) automatically adopt the same set of permissions / levels of access.

oneFish Groups
Only the Chief Editor can create, edit and delete member groups in oneFish. Once a group has been set up, at the behest of a topic editor, member names can be added to that group. This will then enable access to a specific topic to be restricted to members of a specific oneFish group.

Setting Topic Permissions
This process is best described using an example:

Example
A specialist network like IIFET - the International Institute of Fisheries Economics and Trade - has set up a virtual office topic in oneFish. Whilst the IIFET topic editor is happy for all users of oneFish to browse the information in their virtual office, she wants only IIFET members to be able to suggest new items of knowledge, new subtopics, and new linkages.

At the request of the IIFET Virtual Office topic editor, the Chief Editor has set up a oneFish member group called IIFET Members. When a member of IIFET joins oneFish, the Chief Editor adds their name to the IIFET Members group.

The Chief Editor has set the required permission levels for each topic within the IIFET Virtual Office, using the Edit Topic form. The image below shows the bottom half of the Edit Topic form with the permissions set for the IIFET Virtual Office.
