| | | | IUU International Meeting | | Date: | 16 June 2005 - 17 June 2005 | | Location: | London (UK) | | Organizer: | UK Department for International Development (DfID). For a booking form and registration information contact: Catherine Loake: c-loake@dfid.gov.uk | | Information: | The UK is directly supporting the work of the High Seas Task Force. This is a group of like-minded states intent on acting upon the pressing need for immediate global political action (www.high-seas.org). Part of this support covers work commissioned by the Department for International Development (DfID) to examine the economic impacts of IUU fishing on developing countries in Africa, South East Asia, Indian Ocean and the Pacific. This work, being undertaken by Marine Resources Assessment Group (MRAG), will be completed in May and is to provide the evidence base for a further initiative on IUU fishing that we are currently considering. We intend to start this with a two-day international meeting at DFID (16th & 17th June), undertaken with cooperation from Norway, to share the results of the study, raise the profile of the issue and agree future actions. This event will bring together representatives of affected countries, industry, development and other government agencies, international specialists, members of the High Seas Task Force, NGOs and the media. An evening event (16 June) for participants has been arranged with support from the Worshipful Company of Fishmongers and Billingsgate Market (www.fishhall.co.uk). Both institutions have expressed concerns over the proliferation of IUU fishing and recognise in particular its potential long-term negative impacts on global fish supplies and developing countries. Meeting Objective Drawing from of the existing international framework of measures aimed at IUU mitigation, and in particular in support of the proposals made by the High Seas Task Force, to examine the contribution that developing countries can make towards controlling IUU activity and the actions necessary to help them achieve this control within their EEZs and in high seas areas. | | Keywords: | IUU; ILLEGAL FISHING; UNREPORTED FISHING; UNREGULATED FISHING; DEVELOPING COUNTRIES |
