20 April 2005

OTTAWA (AFP) - The Canadian government is hoping to kick-start global efforts to save the world's endangered fisheries stocks.

Canadian officials said Wednesday that Fisheries Minister Geoff Regan will host the "Conference on the Governance of High Seas Fisheries and the UN Fish Agreement" in St. John's, Newfoundland from May 1 to 5.

So far, 48 countries have agreed to attend with 18 sending cabinet ministers.
