This Programme is targeted at the poorest sectors of society - small scale and subsistence fishing communities which have little or no alternative to fishing as an activity, and which depend on fisheries for their livelihood. Both food security and improved opportunities for income generation from sustainable resource exploitation are important factors in alleviating poverty. In the context of fisheries, better management is the key to achieving this.

The FMSP addresses this need with a range of projects within a framework that is defined by two general programme purposes directed at capture and enhancement fisheries. For both capture and enhancement fisheries, the programme targets benefits at the community level and evaluates options for community participation in management and reduction of resource use conflict.   more...

TitleReview of marine fisheries resources for Kenya  ( Document )
Author(s) / Editor(s)Malleret-King, D.; King, A.; Mangubhai, S.; Tunje, J.; Muturi, J.; Mueni, E.; On'ganda, H.
DescriptionIn Kenya, the marine fishery is predominantly small scale and artisanal. The marine catch is estimated to represent only 8.3% of the total fish catch of the country (Sanders et al, 1990), the rest coming from inland lakes and rivers, predominantly Lake Victoria. Due to this apparently low importance the marine fishery has historically received much less interest from the point of view of research and governance. This in turn has meant that reliable social, economic and scientific information is lacking.
